For another year at thanksgiving, Shawn and I were given the chance to enjoy a 3 day cruise to Ensenada, Mexico. Not only would this be our first non-Disney cruise (which was an adjustment), but also my first time to Mexico. Yes–I have lived in Southern California all my life and never been to Mexico until the age of 32. Don’t ask why… mostly its because I didn’t have a passport until i was 20 & lived in the midwest until 22…and never got the guts to drive across the southern border to TJ.
I have to first thank my work as I won this cruise in a random raffle drawing from having good service scores this summer. AAA is an amazing company and knows when to put members and its employees first. So I can’t really complain about anything.
So we arrived on Thursday-thanksigivng- around 2pm. It was a little of an adjustment because it was Thanksgiving and typically we are with family. But when it’s a gift and Shawn could only get this weekend off,so we made exceptions. We don’t like shopping on Black Friday anyways so getting away was a pleasant experience.
The Carnival cruise dock is right next to the Queen Mary in Long Beach. It was weird because less than a few weeks ago, we were on the Queen Mary looking back at the Carnival ship loading passengers for another trip. The large white dome on the left was once the home of the Spruce Goose (one of Howard Hughes’ prices airplanes) and now pushes thousands of people through customs and lines onto cruise ships. You’re not allowed to take pictures inside (sad because it is amazing to see the size) but it is interesting to see that it’s just a check in counter, security and customs pass-through after such a unique item was housed there.
Thursday night we meet our dinner friends (which included 2 couples from Florida, one from San Diego, and one from who knows where because they didn’t show for half of the dinners.) Dinners were okay. Nothing special and clearly nothing compared to Disney. Hey–you even had to pay for soda use which is something Dinsey does for free. Let’s just say I drank a lot of water, juice and lemonade. Carnival is known to be more of a party boat so if are looking for a good time where you can buying an alcohol drinking package..this is your cruise line. Since I was on medicine and Shawn wanted more than just alcohol…we didn’t purchase anything.
The room was unexpectedly large. We had a ocean view room (something a little more rare to obtain on Disney due to it going so fast) with a 3-door closet and larger bathroom. It was larger than the inside we had in Alaska but nothing compared to the 2-room bathroom from our large suite in the Bahamas.
